Cleaning Schools: Comments from School Custodians

As a consultant and former school custodian, I have had the opportunity to speak to thousands of custodians over the years. Below are some of the major comments and concerns that I continue to hear.
Who's in charge?
I can do anything as long as I am trained.
There needs to be better communications between administration and custodians.
I need a manual (SOP) standard operating procedure
Teachers need to understand their role in keeping the building clean.
I need feedback to do my work. I need a staff evaluation to know if I'm doing good
There is too much food in the building. It's not a restaurant
I need appreciation and respect. Just because I clean doesn't mean that I'm not valuable
My principal is nice, but does not have the time or training to oversee all of the custodians duties.
There are too many people running around the buildings at night. It's a security and time issue.
